What the Magdalen Commission Scheme is
The Magdalen Commission Scheme was set up because of The Magdalen Commission Report of Mr Justice John Quirke 2013. The report stated that an ex gratia scheme of a lump sum and weekly cash payments should be set up right away.
How to qualify
You can ask for the qualifying conditions from the Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth (DCEDIY).
Application of the Scheme to 14 Adjoining institutions
Following a recommendation from the Ombudsman, the government decided that women who worked in the laundries of the 12 'Magdalen' institutions but who were resident in one of 14 adjoining institutions could also apply for the scheme. To make this possible, an addendum to the terms of the 2013 ex gratia scheme was published in 2018.
Rates of payment
The government decided in November 2013 that the Department of Social Protection (DSP) should make the weekly payments to the relevant women.
The rate of payment is based on social welfare payments you are currently getting. This ensures that:
- if you are under age 66 years, you will receive payment of €120 per week from 3 October 2024
- if you are aged 66 or over, you will receive payment equivalent to the maximum State Pension Contributory rate. This rate increased to €289.30 from 2 January 2025 in line with increase to State Pension Contributory
If your lump sum payment was more than €50,000, you may also receive the lump sum balance as a weekly payment from DSP
