Climate Change and Adaptation
Human-induced climate change, including more frequent and intense extreme weather events, has already caused extensive impacts on nature and people, threatening the food and water security for millions around the globe.
The recent Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report - Climate Change 2022: Impacts, Adaptation and Vulnerability confirms that these climate impacts are now an irreversible reality for every country including Ireland.
The National Adaptation Framework
Ireland’s strategy for the application of climate adaptation measures to reduce the vulnerability of the State to the negative effects of climate change, and to seek opportunities for any positive effects that may occur, is contained in the 2018 National Adaptation Framework (NAF).
The strategic vision for the Framework was to develop a ‘climate resilient Ireland’. It sets out a high-level vision of the capacity of Ireland’s social, economic and environmental systems to cope with climate change by responding or reorganising in ways that maintain their function, identity and structure, while also developing capacity to adapt, learn and transform.
A primary objective of the NAF is to bring a clear and strong focus to both the challenges and to the opportunities for transitioning to a climate resilient future. Also important is the need to have a positively focussed and cost-effective national transition agenda.
We are now reviewing the Framework in line with the requirements of the Climate Action and Low Carbon Development Act. The submissions made to this consultation will inform the recommendations to the Minister regarding the NAF and will help to guide national adaptation priorities over the coming years.
We invite interested parties to take part in the review by completing our online questionnaire.
The closing date for submissions is 5.30pm on Wednesday 20 July 2022
If you have any difficulty accessing our online survey, or you wish to make a submission by email or post, or in Irish, please contact us by emailing NationalAdaptationFramework@decc.gov.ie
