The Statement of Strategy defines the department's mandate, mission and strategies for a 3 year period from 2019 to 2021. It sets the key outcomes and indicators that the department will use to measure its performance. It also takes account of the contribution the department and its agencies must make to meet its obligations under international agreements.
The areas that the department is responsible for are diverse, encompassing the Communications, Climate Action, Environment, Energy and Natural Resource sectors. The department is also responsible for 17 commercial, non-commercial and regulatory agencies. These sectors and agencies undergo substantial and rapid change, therefore the Statement of Strategy must exist to ensure that the department is actively engaged in shaping and responding to that change.
Objectives and strategies inevitably evolve as circumstances change, therefore the Statement of Strategy itself is a dynamic document. However, despite it's dynamic nature, it acts as a robust benchmark of the objectives, strategies and target outcomes of the department, for example, in the department's annual reports, the department's performance will be measured by reference to the indicators contained in the Statement of Strategy.
