1.45pm, Thursday 3 October: Update from the National Emergency Coordination Group
Met Éireann’s current forecasts indicate that Storm Lorenzo will move across the country during Thursday into Friday morning, moving NorthWest to SouthEast across the country, potentially bringing strong winds, rain and the threat of coastal flooding. Met Éireann have issued weather warnings and advisories and these are available on www.met.ie (link is external). Met Éireann will continue to monitor and warnings and advisories will be updated throughout the storm.
4.00pm, Wednesday 2 October: Update on schools, universities, Institutes of Technology and all education centres
Schools and all education centres (universities, Institutes of Technology and further education centres) in areas affected by a status orange alert should remain vigilant, and keep themselves appraised of any hourly and other updates from Met Éireann, and from their local authorities, local radio, and An Garda Síochána, according to the Department of Education and Skills.
In all events, and if in any doubt, schools and other education settings should err on the side of caution. Schools are empowered to make closure decisions if, in their judgment in the interests of the safety of the school community, it is prudent to do so.
3.15pm, Wednesday 2 October: Guidance for farmers, fishermen and people in rural areas
The Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Michael Creed TD, today urged farmers, fishermen and people in rural areas to be extra vigilant and take precautions as Storm Lorenzo approaches the country. The exact impact of the storm is yet to be determined but it is important that sensible steps are taken in advance rather than when it arrives.
2.30pm, Wednesday 2 October: Update on welfare services from the Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection (DEASP)
Currently, DEASP offices are expected to remain open tomorrow (Thursday 3 October), subject to further warnings and local conditions. If customers are unable to attend an appointment due to weather conditions, they are advised to contact their local Intreo office to re-arrange.
The department has also confirmed that the Humanitarian Assistance Scheme will be activated as necessary. This scheme provides assistance to people whose homes are damaged by flooding or severe weather events, who are not in a position to meet costs for essential needs, household items and in some instances structural repair.
