Government announces Taskforce for Dublin City Centre

The government has appointed a taskforce to take a holistic view of the measures required to rejuvenate Dublin City Centre, north and south.

The goal is to make Dublin City Centre a more thriving, attractive, and safe cityscape; and a desirable location to live, work, do business and visit.

The High-Level Taskforce will make clear and concrete recommendations on improving the City Centre’s public realm, safety and experience within a 12-week timeframe.

Taking an evidence-based approach to its work, the Taskforce will deliver a cohesive and focused list of recommendations to deliver on a shared vision of central Dublin’s public space. This will draw on current plans and submissions and complement work already underway within Dublin City Co-ordination Office. It will also take full account of existing initiatives such as Dublin’s North East Inner City Initiative and the Dublin North Inner City Local Community Safety Partnership.

David McRedmond, CEO of An Post, has agreed to serve as Independent Chair of the Taskforce. The overall membership will be a maximum of 12, to include:

  • Public Service including An Garda Siochana, Local Authority representatives and the National Transport Authority
  • business and trade union representatives
  • community/service provider representatives
  • cultural and arts providers

Speaking at the launch, Taoiseach Simon Harris said:

“Dublin City Centre has always been a vibrant destination for locals, businesses and tourists who come to enjoy all the wonderful amenities it has to offer. More recently we have seen increased concerns for public safety and a diminished overall experience on our streets.

“To respond to this, I’m delighted to announce the establishment of a new Taskforce to urgently examine what needs to be done which will be headed up by Independent Chair David McRedmond, CEO of An Post. I want to thank David for taking on this important role and I very much look forward to receiving the Taskforce’s report and recommendations to return Dublin’s City Centre to the vibrant, safe destination we all want it to be.”

Minister for Environment, Climate and Communications Eamon Ryan said:

“Today's announcement and the appointment of David McRedmond as Chair of the new Dublin City Taskforce is good news for the city centre. The Taskforce will take a holistic view of the measures required to rejuvenate the Dublin City Centre area and the government looks forward to receiving its recommendations during the summer.”

Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage Darragh O’Brien stated:

“I welcome today’s announcement, which will build on the good work already underway in parts of Dublin and bring a co-ordinated and evidence-informed approach to interrogating issues and identifying concrete recommendations on improving the City Centre’s public realm, safety and experience - making it a more thriving, attractive and safe cityscape.”

The Taskforce will be supported in its work by Dublin City Council, An Garda Síochána, the Department of the Taoiseach, the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage, and the Department of Justice.
