Statement by the Taoiseach on the Death of Judge Donal Barrington

The Taoiseach has expressed his condolences to the family and loved ones of the late Judge Donal Barrington.

“The late Judge Barrington served the State with great distinction as a Judge of the Supreme Court, the High Court and the European Court of First Instance.

“His expertise in constitutional law was widely recognised during a distinguished career as a Judge and as a lawyer where he successfully argued many ground-breaking cases.

“Judge Barrington leaves behind an admirable and honourable legacy, in particular for his work in the field of civil liberties. His appointment as the first president of the Irish Commission on Human Rights is testament to his peerless record in this important field of law.

“I know that Judge Barrington’s legacy will continue to inspire young lawyers now and in the future.
