"I am deeply saddened to learn of the death of former Minister Noel Treacy, a good friend and an outstanding public representative, who served both his community and country with great distinction.
"Representing Galway East in the Dáil from 1982 right through to 2011, Noel brought great energy, warmth and dedication to his many Ministerial roles across a range of departments including Finance, Justice, Transport, Enterprise, Trade and Employment, the Department of Taoiseach and Agriculture and Food.
"As Minister for Science and Technology, he played a significant role in building our modern economy, and as Minister of Europe he worked tirelessly to make Ireland an effective and constructive member of the EU.
"Noel was a dedicated family man and loyal colleague.
"His capacity to connect with the people he served, wherever they were, and infectious enthusiasm leaves a lasting legacy on Irish public life.
"My deepest sympathies go to his wife Mary, his children Joan, Emer, Lisa and Rory and to all his extended family and friends today."
