Cabinet approves landmark Bill that will introduce world-leading moves to reduce waste and influence behaviour
30 March 2022
The Circular Economy Bill, which has been published by the government, will underpin Ireland’s shift from a “take-make-waste” linear model to a more sustainable pattern of production and consumption that will instead minimise waste to help significantly reduce our greenhouse gas emissions.
In a circular economy, waste and resource use are minimised. The use and value of products and materials is maintained for as long as possible. When a product has reached the end of its life its parts are used again and again – to create further useful products, instead of being discarded which is an all too familiar pattern now.

Ireland moves a step closer to energy independence
21 March 2022
The Minister for the Environment, Climate and Communications, Eamon Ryan TD, today announced the commencement of the Maritime Area Consent (MAC) Regime. The new regime enables the Minister, on an interim basis, to issue Maritime Area Consents (MACs) to renewable energy developers who meet the relevant assessment criteria. Developers must have a Maritime Area Consent to make an application for permission, to include environmental assessments, to An Bord Pleanála.
The Minister will assess MAC applicants in key areas, including financial and technical competency. This assessment of potential offshore developers will ensure that only the most viable offshore projects will have the opportunity to apply for permission from An Bord Pleanála, thus streamlining the process. The first MACs are expected to be issued in the second half of 2022.

Government launches the National Retrofitting Scheme
8 February 2022
Government has today (Tuesday, 8 February) approved a package of supports to make it easier and more affordable for homeowners to undertake home energy upgrades, for warmer, healthier and more comfortable homes, with lower energy bills. The measures address barriers to undertaking energy upgrades (retrofits) reported by homeowners and those working in the industry. They also reflect the step-change needed – in pace and scale of delivery – to achieve our target of 500,000 home energy upgrades, to B2 Building Energy Rating (BER) standard, by 2030.
The changes represent an important step in delivery of the National Retrofit Plan, which identifies a range of measures aimed at driving demand for retrofit, expanding the size and capacity of the supply chain, as well as making retrofits more affordable.

Final Consultation on the draft of the Second SDG National Implementation Plan 2022-2024
Open for submissions from 19 May 2022
Submissions closed 14 June 2022
Agenda 2030 encourages countries to integrate the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into planning and policy, on both a national and international level. As a whole-of-government initiative overseen by the Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications, each Minister has responsibility for implementing individual SDG targets related to their functions.
The Department of the Environment, Climate and Communication are now in the process of finalising the draft of the Second SDG National Implementation Plan which will set out arrangements for interdepartmental coordination, stakeholder engagement and actions needed for further SDG Implementation from 2022 to 2024.
An initial consultation process held last summer reached over 5,000 individuals, and the feedback received has directly informed the priorities and actions of this draft Implementation Plan. The Department are now launching a final round of consultation on the draft Implementation Plan to facilitate an additional opportunity for feedback and to form the basis for discussions at the relaunch of the SDG National Stakeholder Forum.
