Climate Action: What the Government is Doing

This page outlines the actions that Ireland is taking to tackle climate change.

What the Government is Doing

The Programme for Government 2020 outlines our commitment to reduce Ireland’s greenhouse gas emissions by 51% over this decade and to achieving climate neutrality by 2050.

These targets are set in law by the Climate Action and Low Carbon Development (Amendment) Act 2021 and are reflected in the Climate Action Plan 2021.

The role of the Climate Action Plan

Ireland's climate action plans provide a roadmap to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions and tackle the climate crisis. They provide specific actions that Government Departments and public bodies will take, together with a timeline for completion of each action.

The Climate Action Delivery Boardwas established in 2019 to oversee and drive the implementation of the Government’s Climate Action Plans.

The Climate Action Plan 2021, reflecting the step up in ambition in the Programme for Government, was published in November 2021. It will be updated annually.

The Climate Action Plan Progress Reports

Progress Reports on the Climate Action Plans are published each quarter.

Six progress reports were produced under the Climate Action Plan 2019. The Progress Reports show that, overall, 78% of the actions in the Climate Action Plan 2019 due by the end of 2020, have been completed.

The latest progress report was published on 14 December 2021. It outlines progress on the 82 climate action measures due for delivery in Q3 2021 under the Interim Climate Actions.

You can read all of the Progress reports here.

The Progress Report relating to Q4 2021 and Q1 2022 will be published in the coming weeks.
