The department's mission is to lead the sustainable development of Tourism, Media and the Gaeltacht and promote participation in Culture, Arts, Sports and the Irish language, supporting social progress and enhancing cultural and economic growth across Irish society.
This Mission will be fulfilled through the delivery of these high-level goals:
• Support the sustainable development of a competitive tourism sector with a particular emphasis on supporting balanced development in communities throughout the country, whilst protecting our environment and natural resources.
• Support and develop engagement with and in, the arts, culture and creativity by individuals and communities, enriching lives through cultural and creative activity; and to promote Ireland's arts, culture, and creativity globally; and to drive a more vibrant and diverse Night-Time Economy.
• Support the use of the Irish language throughout Ireland, in the European Union and globally, and to normalise its use in the operations of the Department as an exemplar for other state agencies, and to strengthen its use as the principal community language of the Gaeltacht.
• Promote greater sports participation by all, with particular focus on female participation and diversity, while continuing to invest in new sports facilities, high performance athletes and the hosting of major events.
• Support public service media and the provision of public service content that reflects the diversity of Irish society; a regulatory and developmental framework that supports a free, plural, diverse and environmentally sustainable media sector; and to drive the development of a robust online safety and digital regulatory framework in Ireland.
