Over €300,000 funding for Gaeltacht sports projects approved by Minister Byrne under Community & Language Support Program

Current funding and capital funding have been approved for 4 different proposals in the Gaeltacht areas of Galway and Mayo to promote the Irish language and Gaelic Games.

The Minister of State for the Gaeltacht Thomas Byrne announced today that he has approved grants of up to €311,849 for 4 sports projects located in the Gaeltacht areas of Galway and Mayo.

The grantees in question are Carna Caiseal GAA, Bearna/Na Forbacha Hurling Club, Connacht GAA Council and the Mayo, Sligo & Leitrim Education & Training Board. The capital proposals relate to the development of sports and community facilities and the current proposals relate to the promotion of Gaelic games.

While visiting the Conamara Gaeltacht today, Minister of State Byrne said:

“I am very pleased to announce these grants today. I am committed to supporting Gaeltacht communities to develop and provide good facilities to the public, and the capital projects funded here are good examples of the type of assistance available under the Community and Language Support Programme.

"In addition, the link between sport and the Irish language for young people in the Gaeltacht is a central measure in the language planning process. I am sure that the current grants that I have announced today will help language planning officers as they seek to create opportunities for young people to use the Irish language inside and outside the education system."
