Application from TG4 under Section 103 of the Broadcasting Act 2009

On 17th May 2022, TG4 submitted a proposal to establish Cúla4 as a dedicated Irish language Children’s Channel and introduce TG4+1 during the night-time broadcast hours on the proposed new channel. In order to make these changes, TG4 required ministerial approval, subject to a Section 103 process as per the Broadcasting Act 2009. In particular, the Minister is required to:
• Consult with TG4 and such other persons as he/she considers appropriate;
• Consult with the BAI on the sectoral impact of the proposal; and
• Consider the public value of the proposal.
The process has concluded and the Minister announced her decision to support the proposal on 28th September 2022. As per Section 103(4)(d) of the Broadcasting Act 2009, a report on the consultation process and the Minister’s decision are linked below:
