The unit has responsibility for the development of the review of the NCI Act 1997 and the National Policy Framework on Culture, Creativity and Climate Action. The aim of this framework is to set the policy foundation and strategic direction for future actions and interventions in Climate Action by the Department’s Culture Division and the bodies under its aegis.
The International Cultural Policy section has responsibility for the coordination and delivery of Ireland's engagement with EU cultural policy; Ireland’s engagement with a number of UNESCO cultural initiatives such as the 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage and the 2005 Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions; providing supports to Ireland’s UNESCO Creative Cities designations; and representing Ireland on a number of international bodies such as the British Irish Council Creative Industries Work Sector and EUNIC Global.
The section in charge of the National Cultural Institutions NDP Programme is responsible for the oversight and provision of funding on a number of capital projects as set out in the National Development Plan including the major redevelopment of the Crawford Art Gallery, the National Concert Hall, the National Gallery of Ireland, the Chester Beatty, Irish Museum of Modern Art, the National Museum of Ireland, including the Natural History Museum and the Museum of Archaeology - Kildare Street.
