Railway Accident Investigation Unit

The Railway Accident Investigation Unit is an independent investigation unit within the Department of Transport.

The purpose of an investigation by the Railway Accident Investigation Unit is to improve railway safety by establishing the cause or causes of an accident with a view to making recommendations for the avoidance of accidents in the future.

It is not the purpose of the Railway Accident Investigation Unit to attribute blame or liability.
