Road agencies and bodies under the aegis of the Department of Transport



Medical Bureau of Road Safety

The MBRS was established in November 1968 under Part V of the Road Traffic Act 1968. Its principal function is to carry out analyses of blood and urine specimens taken from people suspected of drink driving offences. The Bureau also analyses blood/urine specimens for the presence of drug(s). The Bureau issues certificates in respect of the results of these analyses, which may be used as evidence in prosecutions for such offences.

Road Safety Authority

The RSA, which is a statutory organisation created by the Road Safety Authority Act 2006, has responsibility for driver testing and training, driver licensing, road safety research, driver education, vehicle standards, road safety information and awareness and road transport enforcement functions. The RSA is based in Ballina, Co. Mayo.

Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII)

Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) was established through a merger of the National Roads Authority and the Railway Procurement Agency under the Roads Act 2015. The TII's primary function is to provide an integrated approach to the future development and operation of the national roads network and light rail infrastructure throughout Ireland.
