The Department of Transport’s Gender Pay Gap Report 2023 shows a reduction of 6.7% in the mean gender pay gap, from 20.4% in 2022 to 13.7% in 2023.
The department has equal pay for men and women in the same grades. However, the gender pay gap arises because of a higher number of men occupying senior professional and technical roles over the reporting period. The report shows that female staff members earn 13.7% less than their male counterparts, equating to a €5.09 difference in the mean hourly rate of pay.
Median and mean pay have both increased by a larger percentage for female staff than male over the past year. This is as a result of greater female representation in the top pay quartile in the department during the 12-month snapshot period.
The department’s overall median gender pay gap has reduced by 6.7%, from 20.8% in 2022 to 14.1% in 2023. There is a €4.82 difference in the median hourly rate between male and female staff members.
While progress has been made this year, the department is committed to achieving a further reduction in its gender pay gap.
The 2023 report highlights what the department already does as an organisation to promote equality and diversity. It provides employees with a range of equal opportunities which include:
- flexible working (including blended working, shorter working year, and work-sharing)
- talent development, mentoring, and coaching
- benefits including an Employee Assistance Service, TaxSaver/Cycle2Work scheme, and wellbeing initiatives such as indoor greening and vaccinations
The Department of Transport remains committed to ensuring an open, diverse, and inclusive workplace that better reflects and supports the communities which it serves. As part of its Public Sector Equality and Human Rights Duty, many equality, diversity, and inclusion initiatives and supports are already in place, and the department will continue to work in this area.
