The Climate Action Plan 2021 (CAP21) envisages the public sector leading by example on climate action to reach the target of reducing Ireland’s greenhouse gas emissions by 51% by 2030 and becoming climate neutral no later than 2050.
To support public sector bodies leading by example, a Public Sector Climate Action Mandate now applies to public bodies covered by the CAP21 decarbonisation targets, with the exception of except for local authorities, commercial semi state bodies, and schools.
This requires public sector bodies to put in place a Climate Action Roadmap to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 51% by 2030 and increase the improvement in energy efficiency from the 33% target in 2020 to 50% by 2030.
This Climate Action Roadmap for the Department of Transport has been developed with the support and guidance of the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI). It sets out an analysis of the 2030 GHG target and current gap to target from the baseline. It also identifies current and planned actions to bridge that gap between now and 2030.
The themes laid out in the Climate Action Roadmap are guided by SEAI guidance documentation and CAP 21. These are:
• Our people
• Our targets
• Our way of working
• Our buildings (and vehicles)
