The Sustainable Mobility Policy (SMP), which was published in April 2022, includes 91 actions supporting behavioural change through a wide range of interventions including, among other things, public transport infrastructure and services, active travel promotion and supports, road safety initiatives, legislative measures, research, and public engagement. A progress report will be published in Q3 2023 to mark the first anniversary of the SMP.
During its first year, the policy was supported through the:
- creation of a Project Management Office (PMO) to support delivery
- establishment of a Leadership Group and Delivery Team to drive the implementation of the policy and ensure delivery of the SMP Pathfinder Programme
- development of an Implementation Plan including milestones to be achieved, risks to be mitigated and key enablers for action delivery
- delivery of a workshop on public acceptance, with focus on engagement and communication
- establishment of SMP Research Network
- advancement of the department’s Climate Action Public Engagement and Communications Strategy
Highlights from year one
- commenced delivery of Connecting Ireland
- reduced public transport fares and introduced new Young Adult Travel Card
- Active Travel Units established in local authorities across the country
- launch of Pathfinder Programme consisting of 35 demonstrator projects aligned to goals of SMP
- Ireland’s first town bus service electrified - Athlone
- Railway Order application for Metrolink submitted
- extension of bike-share scheme to Waterford
