This National Search and Rescue Plan establishes the national framework for the overall development, deployment and improvement of search and rescue services within the Irish Search and Rescue Region and to meet domestic and international commitments.
The purpose of the National Search and Rescue Plan is to promote a planned and nationally coordinated search and rescue response to persons in distress at sea, in the air or on land.
The National Search and Rescue Committee (NSARC) established a Search and Rescue (SAR) Interim Review Group in May 2002 to review the performance and adequacy of the National Search and Rescue Plan (NSP) against key performance criteria and make recommendations to the Minister for Transport, on how the NSP can be enhanced in line with emerging demands, technology, and other factors. The Review took place over 2022 and 2023 and involved a comprehensive consultation exercise and represented the collective input of the multi-faceted SAR community in Ireland. The Review makes 27 recommendations and proposes specific changes to existing SAR oversight and advisory structures which have now come into effect.
