What to do if you find a bird or seal covered in oil

Below are some basic guidelines to help you deal with a request for assistance for an animal in need of help.

Seals

  • keep children and dogs away
  • do not touch, seals bite
  • never put a seal pup back in the water as it may get into difficulty
  • call the Irish Seal Sanctuary on 01 8354370

If you take in a seal pup

  • do not keep in heat - if you think the pup is cold, then dry off excess water and keep in a draught free area
  • do not place on loose bedding as they might eat it; pups have a need to suck
  • do not use disinfectant; many disinfectants are poisonous to seals, check with the Irish Seal Sanctuary or a vet before using any disinfectant
  • do not give milk in any form. Seals are very intolerant of lactose - it can kill.

If you transport a pup to a seal sanctuary

  • get it rehydrated first - place a bowl of water near it or pour water near its head
  • get it to the vet to check it over
  • place the pup in a well ventilated box; ideally instead of a lid use wire as a lid
  • keep the car cool and fresh with plenty of air; remember it is very likely the pup has respiratory problems, it needs lots of fresh air.

What to do if you find an bird covered in oil

  • protect yourself; lift it using a towel or blanket. Protect yourself from beaks especially your eyes. The oil itself is an irritant and can be carcinogenic.
  • put the bird into a ventilated cardboard box with the towel and cover the box to keep it dark. If needs be, punch air holes in the side of the box.
  • keep in a warm room; oiled birds are very cold. If the room is too warm for you, it's right for an oiled bird. Keep it in a quiet place without exposure to sudden loud noises.
  • do not wash the bird: Oiled birds are exhausted, cold, dehydrated, hungry and frightened. Washing the bird will possibly kill it, as it can no longer take any more stress

Again, you can call the Irish Seal Sanctuary for advice (they deal with birds too - despite the name!) 01-8354370
