Our social networks, the number of people we connect with, can often reduce due to changes in our lives, but that does not have to be the case. There are many ways that we can build and increase our social connections.
- keep learning – Join a local group or class to learn something new (or revisit an old skill or hobby). Learning new things or developing new skills can really help build self confidence, improve self esteem, and can also help you get to know others with similar interests
- get active – Find a physical activity that you enjoy and join a local group. There are plenty of options to choose from, from local walking groups to walking football teams! Contact your local sports partnership to see what activities are available in your area
- volunteer – Helping others and participating in your community can be hugely beneficial to your own wellbeing, as well as those that you are helping. It can be something simple such as checking in with someone who may be a bit isolated, volunteering at your local parkrun or volunteering in a more formal role. There are a huge number of options when it comes to volunteering, go to Volunteer.ie for more information
- get online – Connecting online with people is a great way to keep in touch with others who may live far away or for other reasons may not be able to meet in person. It is also a great way to engage with people with similar interests. If you’re not totally comfortable online, check out our Resources page for classes and resources to help you get online
- adopt a pet – If it would work with your lifestyle and home, you could consider adopting a pet. Pets can bring great comfort to their owners and provide company at home. Owning pets has also been shown to reduce stress
- get in touch – Plan some time each day to reach out to family and friends, even if that’s just a text or a quick call. You could brighten someone else’s day as well as your own
- get involved – Getting involved in your community is a great way to help improve your mental wellbeing. It can help you to connect with those around you and increase a sense of belonging and purpose. Check out your local men’s and women’s sheds and more at Resources
- reach out – If you would like to talk to someone about concerns or worries you are having or even just to have a chat.
