Helping others build Social Connections

Keeping in contact with friends and family is important for our mental wellbeing and can be a lifeline for those who are vulnerable or isolated. Even a friendly phone call can make a huge difference to someone’s day.

  • get in touch – Plan a little time to reach out, set a reminder and send a text or make a call
  • volunteer – Join a network that provides support to those who are isolated, become part of a befriending team or get involved in hosting of social events
  • offer help – Offer practical help to someone you know that may need it or that may not have any family nearby. Helping with shopping, doing odd jobs around the house or taking them to places such as the library or hairdressers could have a huge impact for them
  • share a meal – Taking an extra portion of home cooked food to a relative or neighbour could be a huge help to them, especially if they are living alone, and it is a lovely way to spend some time with them
  • provide help with technology – Helping people who are not used to using technology to stay connected is a great way to help them get connected to family, friends, and others who may have similar interests to them. Set them up on email with a list of email addresses for family and friends, link them to family and friends on social media platforms, add them to a family or neighbourhood WhatsApp group
  • support – Keep an eye out for vulnerable neighbours and friends, especially coming into winter, ensuring that they have enough food and fuel to keep them healthy and well
