The Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly has reappointed the following members to the Podiatrists Registration Board with effect from 16 October 2022 until 15 October 2026.
Angela started her Podiatry journey with a Diploma in Chiropody after a 3 year course in the Northern Ireland School of Chiropody from 1983 to 1986, which included +1,000 hours of hands-on clinical practice. Although this was a degree-equivalent diploma she resumed study in 1992, upgrading to an Honours Degree in Podiatric Medicine from New College Durham following submission of a research thesis. Continuing to complete 30+ hours of continuous professional development per year, she has undertaken Post-graduate modules in Rheumatology (U. of Ulster), Podiatric Dermatology (U. of Southampton), Allergy (U. of Greenwich) and Health Literacy (NUI Galway). In 2010 she graduated with a Master’s Degree in Health Promotion from NUI Galway, and is subsequently the coordinator of two modules in the BSc Podiatric Medicine course in NUI Galway. Angela has been an active member of The Society of Chiropodists & Podiatrists of Ireland (SCPI) since 1988 and a Board Member for five years. She has owned and worked full-time in private practice in Galway City for the past thirty years. She is passionate about the Podiatry profession and keen to see regulation for the protection of the public and increased opportunities for junior colleagues coming into the profession.
David Watterson is a podiatry clinical manager for the HSE in CHO Area 2, and has worked for the Public Health Service since 2002. As well as being responsible for the professional specific governance for clinicians in primary care and hospital services, David is also responsible for the management and governance for Merlin Park Podiatry Clinic. The clinic based in Galway provides the majority of the clinical education for the students from the Podiatric Medicine programme in NUI Galway. Along with his HSE role David is an honorary senior lecturer with the podiatric Medicine programme and teaches both academic and clinical elements of the programme. His role also allows him to participate in research, when time permits.
Kieran O’Leary is CEO of Diabetes Ireland with responsibility for the efficient management of the organisation since 1998. This includes oversight of 2 Care Centres, of which providing a not-for-profit fee paying footcare prevention service for clients is a central component. He also works closely with the HSE to provide podiatrists who work in the community providing a high risk footcare service to clients. He is a current Director of Diabetes Ireland Research Alliance. He previously worked in the UK Department of Health and NHS Executive.
Catherine recently completed a twelve-month term as Acting Executive Director (Oct 17-Sept 18) of the Faculty of Nursing & Midwifery, Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI). Building on her existing experience and executive leadership, she gained further skills in strategic planning, corporate governance, chairing and networking during this time. Catherine’s current role is Operations & Education Manager in the Faculty. In this role, she works collaboratively with the Executive Director and the Faculty Board to ensure that the day to day activities, of education and research, including the Annual International Conference, all contribute towards the delivery of the Faculty’s strategic plan. Catherine joined the RCSI in January 2006 as a Lecturer. Prior to this, she held the post of Clinical Nurse Manager 11 in the ICU/HDU, Our Lady’s Hospital, Navan, Co. Meath (2004-2005) and staff nurse in renal transplantation, orthopaedics and intensive care in Beaumont Hospital, Dublin (1996-2003). Catherine holds a Higher Diploma (Intensive Care Nursing), BSs (Nursing), MSc (Nursing), Postgraduate Diploma (Clinical Health Sciences Education) and the Fellowship of the Faculty of Nursing & Midwifery, RCSI (FFNMRCSI). Catherine is also registered as a Nurse Tutor.
Dr Aonghus O’Loughlin has extensive experience in the delivery of healthcare in Ireland. He works in clinical care provision, service development, education and research and has significant experience in working as part of a multidisciplinary team with podiatrists. He commenced his career in Boston, USA in 1997 and subsequently worked in Galway University Hospital (GUH) and several other Irish hospitals where he held a variety of senior professional positions. He is currently serving as Consultant Physician in Endocrinology, Diabetes Mellitus and General Internal Medicine in Galway University Hospital. Aonghus has been closely involved in the establishment of an effective diabetes care and endocrinology service and ran an endocrinology clinic out of the diabetes day centre in GUH. In addition, he provided a weekly consultant service in the complex foot clinic at Galway University Hospital. He is an honorary senior lecturer with National University of Ireland, Galway (NUIG). Aonghus has been the recipient of many scholarships and academic awards and has published extensively in professional journals. He has also made numerous oral and poster presentations. His professional qualifications include a PhD Medicine awarded by NUI Galway in 2012.
