On his co-option by the Medical Council, the Minister for Health, Mr Stephen Donnelly TD, has appointed the following person as a member of the Medical Council with effect from 3 November 2020 to 31 May 2023:
Dr Michael McGloin
Dr McGloin graduated from the National University of Ireland in Galway in 1978 and subsequently embarked on his medical training at Portiuncula Hospital, Ballinasloe rotating through general medicine, paediatrics, psychiatry, obstetrics & gynaecology over the course of the next 5 years. Following this, having served as Registrar in paediatrics & neonatology at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda Dr McGloin moved into General Practice in the mid-west of Ireland before establishing a successful General Practice with Dr Bridget Keane in Athenry, Galway.
The practice is currently operating from the Athenry Primary Care with five partners and two GP Registrars – one each from the Galway (Western) and Ballinasloe (Midlands) GP Training Programmes. Dr McGloin is currently the Chairman of the Steering Committee of the Western Training Programme
Dr McGloin has always had an interest in community development and as a teenager led a group that built a tennis court and developed a soccer pitch in his village. The group also established a drama group extending the parish hall to accommodate a small theatre. All these clubs continue to the present day.
Dr McGloin is currently the conductor of the Kiltullagh Community Choir which, as well as supporting the local church, holds five or six charity concerts each year to support local organisations.
Dr McGloin is involved in and has served on the Board of the Irish Pilgrimage Trust (IPT) for 15 years. The IPT has brought over 500 disabled children to Lourdes at Easter and has organised “friendship Weeks” – weeklong respite holidays for the young people staffed by volunteers. To facilitate this work two purpose-built holiday homes were constructed in Clarenbridge, Co. Galway and Kilraine, Co Wexford.
Dr McGloin has an interest in sport and trained in Sports Medicine. He was the team doctor for the Galway Hurling Team from 1987- 2010.
Dr McGloin has worked with the Medical Council over the past 10 years. He was co-opted to the Preliminary Proceedings Committee initially and worked with this group for approximately eight years. Dr McGloin is currently a member of the Fitness to Practice Committee.
