Following a nomination from the Royal Irish Academy (RIA), the Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly has appointed Professor Catherine Godson to the Board of the Medical Council with effect from 24 May 2023 to 31 May 2026.
Professor Catherine Godson is a highly decorated biomedical scientist and biotechnology entrepreneur of international renown. She is a global authority on the role of lipids as natural anti-inflammatory agents in human diseases such as arthritis and as modulators of scarring in chronic diseases such as diabetes.
Prof Godson is the Director of the Diabetes Complications Research Centre in the UCD Conway Institute. She is also Associate Dean for Research and Innovation at the School of Medicine in UCD.
She holds senior leadership roles in academia; serving on the boards of major international research organisations and charitable foundations. She is a current Board Member of the Irish Research Council and previous Board Member of the Health Research Board. She has received numerous honours and awards from leading Irish and international research bodies and distinguished societies.
