Civil Service Excellence and Innovation Awards

Well done to our Civil Defence and Department of Defence ICT colleagues who won the Workforce of the Future Award at Civil Service Excellence and Innovation Awards for their project ‘Civil Defence Volunteer & Equipment Management System’ (VEMS).

The objective of the project was to develop an effective, modernised Civil Defence Volunteer and Equipment Management System (VEMS) to include:

an Online Register of Civil Defence volunteers
a record of Garda Vetting for volunteers
management of volunteer training including validation of training pre-requisites
management of volunteer deployments to operations
management of vehicle and equipment maintenance including alerts for scheduled maintenance
online ordering of stock and consumables from Central Stores
assignment of stock items to Volunteers, including uniforms and PPE
online portal for volunteers giving direct system access through their tablet or smartphone, allowing them to see and be notified of upcoming events and training
dashboards to provide real-time information to enable efficient use of resources and support enhanced management and growth of the service to the citizen
identify Access Management and Data Protection by Design and Default

The system is used both by the Department of Defence and Local Authorities across the country.
