Following their election by registrants of the profession, the Minister for Health, Simon Harris TD, has appointed the following persons as professional members of the Radiographers Registration Board with effect from 20 February 2020 to 23 January 2024:
Ms Michelle Sugrue
Ms Sugrue qualified from the University of Hertfordshire with a BSc in Diagnostic Radiography in 2011. During the first two years of her career, she worked in a central London hospital, predominantly in CT. Here, she played a key role in conducting an audit on radiation exposure to the lens of the eye during CT brain scans. This led to a beneficial change in hospital protocol. She was also appointed the role of Safety Officer for this department.
On returning to Ireland in 2013, she worked on a locum basis. She remains a member of the Dublin locum group, which allows an insight into the operation and function of a variety of hospitals. In April 2013, Michelle accepted a permanent post in Cork University Hospital (CUH). In this department, Michelle worked within many specialist areas, including an extensive role in the Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory. In addition to this, she was involved in the education and guidance of CUH student radiographers, which encouraged her to complete a diploma in ‘Clinical Leadership’. Michelle was also a member of the CPD committee in CUH, working closely with other committee members in organising CPD events and learning opportunities for her colleagues.
Ms Sugrue went on to complete a Postgraduate Certificate in Breast Imaging, at London South Bank University. In January 2018, she commenced her current role as a Senior Radiographer in the Breast Check service at the Merrion Unit, Dublin. Soon after taking up this post, she was appointed the role of clinical trainer.
Mr Ciaran Walsh
Mr Walsh is the RSM in the Bon Secours Cork, Ireland’s largest private hospital, currently undergoing major development and expansion. He trained in the UK where he worked in both NHS and private hospitals. Ciaran returned to Ireland to set up the CT service in St. Columcille’s Hospital, Loughlinstown before becoming RSM in the South Infirmary Victoria University Hospital, Cork.
Over the years, he has been involved in multiple regional and national projects. He has organised many short courses and study days for radiographers such as Red Dot, Cardiac Imaging and Cross-Sectional Anatomy. Mr Walsh was closely associated with the establishment of the UCC postgraduate Radiography programme and does occasional lectures for the students.
Ms Niamh Moore
As a CT clinical specialist radiographer and currently as a lecturer in UCC Ms Niamh Moore has always listened to, and delivered on, the needs of others. Throughout her 20 years of clinical experience in CUH, predominantly in CT, she has ensured a high-quality CT service and education was delivered effectively utilising the allocated resources. The skills required in this role included listening to diverse needs, synthesising information and prioritising resources.
Ms Moore has been actively involved in research in CT for over 10 years. She is currently on the IIRRT national council and has been a member of a Radiography Education Group since 2013 from which she developed a nationally accredited IV course. This group led to the development of an MSc Diagnostic Radiography programme in UCC, where she was the Programme Development Co-Ordinator and is now a Lecturer on the programme.
