Following a Public Appointments Service (PAS) campaign, the Minister for Health, Simon Harris TD, has appointed the following non-professional members to the Health and Social Care Professionals Council (CORU)with effect from 24 November 2019 to 20 March 2023:
Dr Tumelty is a full time academic in the School of Law at University College Cork. Dr Tumelty has a PhD and a Bachelor of Law from the University of Limerick. Her research interests include medical law and ethics, patient safety and alternative dispute resolution.
She has a strong record in interdisciplinary research in the areas of medical law and ethics, tort law, and alternative dispute resolution, including publishing, attracting research funding and engaging with stakeholders. Dr Tumelty is also an external examiner for many academic courses, including courses in the areas of health law and ethics.
Dr Tumelty has completed an advanced course in mediation at Harvard Law School, with a focus on strategies and tools to build consensus, manage complex situations, and resolve disagreements.
Mr Downes is an experienced senior executive with international and multicultural experience. Mr Downes’s specialities include operations management and leadership of cross functional teams to deliver on corporate objectives. He has extensive experience in the fields of operations management, organisational transformation, project development, employee engagement, client relationships and leading contractual negotiations.
Mr Downes is currently the CEO of Affidea Ireland and has worked in senior operations management roles across a number of different industries. Mr Downes also has experience as a Technical Sales Director and in Plant Management. His academic background includes a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering from DIT Bolton Street and a Master’s in Business Administration from the Imperial College Business school, London.
The Minister for Health, Simon Harris TD, has re-appointed the following non-professional member to the Health and Social Care Professionals Council (CORU) with effect from 24 November 2019 to 20 March 2023:
Dr Smith is a Lecturer in the School of Business and Humanities at the Institute of Technology Carlow and a Research Associate at the Children’s Research Centre, TCD. She was awarded a PhD in Psychology from Trinity College Dublin. Her research interests and publications are primarily in the areas of children and childhood.
Dr Smith previously practised as a social worker and probation officer in London, Belfast and Dublin. She has worked as an Independent Person and Complaints Investigator for Local Authorities in England and Wales.
Dr Smith has considerable knowledge and experience of institutional reviews and quality assurance in the higher education sector. She has acted as Panel Member and Chair of Programmatic and Institutional Reviews of third-level institutions on behalf of Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQI).
