Re-appointments to the Health Research Board – November 2020

The Minister for Health, Stephen Donnelly TD, has re-appointed Professor Bernadette Hannigan and Professor Charles Normand as members of the Health Research Board. Their terms of appointment are from 5 November 2020 to 4 November 2023.
Professor Bernadette Hannigan
Bernadette Hannigan is Director of Research, Translation and Innovation in Public Health England. Previously (2008 – 2014) Bernie was Director of R&D for Health and Social Care in Northern Ireland, preceded by academia / academic leadership with the University of Ulster and non-executive Board memberships including Invest Northern Ireland and the Marine Institute.
A native of Dublin, Bernie graduated from Trinity College Dublin - BA(Mod) Natural Sciences - and PhD (Immunology) from the National University of Ireland for research at the RCSI. She led or participated in research teams that attracted significant external funding, authored over 100 papers and 2 textbooks and supervised 20 successful PhD students.
Professor Bernadette Hannigan does not serve on any other State Board.
Professor Charles Normand
Charles Normand is an economist and Emeritus Professor in the Centre for Health Policy and Management at Trinity College Dublin. His is also part time Professor of the Economics of Palliative Care at the Cicely Saunders Institute at Kings College London and is vice chair of the Board at St James’s Hospital.
Charles’s main research and policy interests are in cancer prevention and treatment, the effects of population ageing on health and social care systems, and palliative and end of life care. He is co-principal investigator on the Irish Longitudinal Study of Ageing (TILDA).
Professor Charles Normand also serves on the Board of St. James’s Hospital.
