The Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly, following a Public Appointments Service campaign, appointed the following members to the Health Research Board.
Dr Leonora Bishop is a Non-Executive Director of Debra Ireland, the charity supporting patients and their families with the rare disease, epidermolysis bullosa. She is also a Non-Executive Director of the Charles Institute of Dermatology, UCD. Leonora has over 20 years’ experience in the life sciences sector, having previously worked with start-ups, academic institutions and Government agencies, including IDA Ireland where she was responsible for driving the RD&I activities within the organization. These included the establishment of the National Institute of Bioprocessing Research and Training, a €55m investment to support the biopharma industry in Ireland and devising the model for large industry-academic collaborative research projects, leading to investments totaling €61m, by BMS, GSK, Beckman Coulter, Smith&Nephew. She currently acts as a consultant to HiTech Health, which provides cell and gene therapy services and enables pharmaceutical companies to launch and supply product. A graduate of University College Cork, Ireland (BSc) and the University of New South Wales, Australia (PhD) Dr Bishop conducted post-doctoral research at Cancer Research UK and held a lectureship at Imperial College, London.
This appointment is from 8 November 2022 until 7 November 2027.
Dr Sarah Barry, PhD has served as Director of the Centre for Health Policy and Management, Trinity College Dublin and Director the HRB funded National SPHeRE Programme in population, policy and health services research. She led the MSc in Health Services Management at Trinity as its Director for over 5 years. Her research interests include change in complex systems, policy implementation and integrated care delivery. Sarah has coordinated change programmes overseas and in Ireland and has been a visiting lecturer at the Milltown Institute of Theology and Philosophy, IBAT Business College Dublin, the Graduate School of Management at RCSI and Munster Technological University. Sarah was a member of the Trinity team who worked with the Irish Government’s Oireachtas All-Party Committee on the Future of Health Care in Ireland in developing the Sláintecare Report and recommendations. She continues to work on Sláintecare implementation through research and evaluation with the Irish National Programme for Integrated Care of Older Persons, the National Strategy Office for Primary and Community Care, the Centre for Effective Services and as a member of the International Foundation for Integrated Care Ireland Steering Group, and the Performance and Delivery Committee of the HSE Board.
