Irish word for bat: Ialtóg.
Bats represent more than a third of Irish mammals with a total of nine species. Bats are the only mammals that can undertake true powered flight. Irish bats are quite small, ranging in weight from 5-12gm.
All of the species found in Ireland, use sound to find their way around in the dark and to catch prey to eat. This is known as echolocation.
Bats use buildings and structures, trees and hedgerows for roosting. Trees and hedgerows also provide food and navigational aid. Many heritage structures are quite likely to have bats present, particularly if the structure is located where there is suitable habitat nearby where bats can forage, such as green spaces and rivers. Bat boxes can provide additional opportunities for bats to rest during the day and can also be used for maternity roosts. Bat boxes should be placed in mature woodlands, wooded gardens, or near water sources, at least 3-5 meters off the ground on tree trunks or poles.
