Casimir Markievicz: A Polish Artist in Bohemian Dublin' Exhibition to Open at Dublin Castle

The Office of Public Works is delighted to announce the launch of ‘Casimir Markievicz: A Polish Artist in Bohemian Dublin 1903 – 1913’ in the State Apartments, Dublin Castle on 24 April 2025. This exciting exhibition delves into the artistic journey of Casimir Markievicz, the Polish husband of the renowned Irish revolutionary, Constance Markievicz.

The exhibition showcases Casimir’s talents as a painter, playwright, and vibrant personality, highlighting his role in Dublin’s bohemian circles leading up to the Revolution. Visitors will have the opportunity to see over 80 artworks and artefacts from major state collections such as the National Gallery of Ireland and private lenders including Lissadell House, offering a rare glimpse into the lives of iconic figures such as W.B. Yeats, George Russell (AE), and William Orpen.

In addition to exploring Casimir’s connections to Ireland, Poland, and Ukraine, the exhibition features photographs of Ukraine’s landscapes captured by Constance, as well as paintings of its countryside created by both artists. This special project, organised in honour of Poland’s Presidency of the EU Council, is a collaboration between the Office of Public Works and the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Dublin.

The ‘Casimir Markievicz: A Polish Artist in Bohemian Dublin 1903 – 1913’ exhibition at Dublin Castle will be open to the public from 24 April to 14 September 2025. Visitors can expect to engage with a range of exceptional artworks and gain a deeper understanding of Casimir’s cultural contributions during this timeframe.
