Minister Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran in Athlone to view the commencement of works at the Showgrounds as part of the Athlone Flood Alleviation Scheme

Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran TD, Minister of State with responsibility for the Office of Public Works (OPW) and Flood Relief, was in Athlone today to witness the commencement of sheet piling works at the Showgrounds as part of the works being undertaken for the Athlone Flood Alleviation Scheme. These works are part of the Deerpark Cell which works commenced on earlier this year.
The Minister said:
“I am delighted to be here today to see the further development of the Athlone Flood Alleviation Scheme. The commencement of sheet piling works at the Showgrounds today as part of the Deerpark Cell are further proof that significant progress is being made in the implementation of the Athlone Flood Alleviation Scheme.
"These works at Deerpark shall include the construction of flood walls, flood gates, a new bridge and permanent embankments along Shamrock Lodge to Lock Gates. Construction is anticipated to be completed by the end of 2020 with works being undertaken directly by OPW’s own workforce.”
The Minister concluded:
“I am delighted with the continued partnership approach we have taken in Athlone with Westmeath County Council. Already, works are underway at the Quay, the Strand, Brick Island and Marine View, with construction works completed at Iona Park. It is expected works at Golden Island will commence next year and subject to planning approval, works will also be commenced at the River Al (Cregan) in 2020.”
The Athlone Flood Alleviation Scheme, when completed, will bring standard flood protection to over 500 properties at a cost of approximately €12 million.
