Minister Moran visits Athlone to view the completion of Phase 1 Works of the redevelopment and refurbishment of Athlone Garda Station

Kevin 'Boxer' Moran TD, Minister of State with responsibility for the Office of Public Works and Flood Relief, was in Athlone today to view the completion of Phase One Works of the restoration and refurbishment of Athlone Garda Station.

Minister Moran said:

“I am pleased to be in my home town today to view the completed works on Phase 1 of the refurbishment of Athlone Garda Station. This is a much needed project for the town which involves the complete restoration and refurbishment of the existing Garda Station and the former Social Protection building next door. A new link building between these buildings will provide a new entrance that is accessible to all and incorporates new facilities for the Gardai."

The works will be undertaken in two main Phases. Phase one of the work incorporated the complete restoration and refurbishment to the former Social Protection building, which is now completed, while phase two will see the restoration of the existing Garda Station Building. An Garda Síochána will now relocate to the newly refurbished Social Protection Building in advance of the commencement works for Phase two. A final element will consist of the linking of both buildings and the removal of temporary installations in the former Social Protection building.

The Minister went on to say:

“An Garda Síochána will remain operational from its existing location on Barrack Street throughout the entire construction works which are expected to be completed in early Autumn 2020."
