Tipperary’s Cahir Castle provides the backdrop this week for the latest performance in a partnership between Other Voices and the Office of Public Works (OPW).
The 13th century castle, managed by the OPW, follows Desmond Castle and Castletown House in providing the stage for Other Voices’ latest series, ANAM: Songs for Hearts and Minds.
On the bill for the Tipperary concert on Thursday evening at 8pm are Lisa Hanningan, Paul Noonan and the Premier County’s own Gemma Hayes.
Stronghold of the Earls of Ormond, the Butler family, for centuries, Cahir Castle is absolutely no stranger to show business.
The castle has provided the setting for many major film and TV productions over the years, including The Tudors, Barry Lyndon, Excalibur, The Last Duel and more recently The Green Knight.
Indeed, in 2021 it was voted ‘location of the year’ by the European Film Commissions Network following the shooting of The Green Knight.
This episode of ANAM will be beamed across the world via the YouTube and Facebook platforms of Other Voices and the OPW.
OPW Head of Heritage Services and Capital Projects Delivery Rosemary Collier said:
>“We are delighted to partner with Other Voices in showcasing such contemporary musical talent here in Cahir Castle. The medieval ambience of the Great Hall provides a wonderful setting for these artists who will be following in a centuries-old tradition of performance in the castle. It will also bring the castle to a new audience worldwide who we hope will be inspired to visit in the future and savour the authentic experience that Cahir has to offer.”
ANAM: Songs for Hearts and Minds is made possible with the generous support of the OPW and the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage.
Philip King from Other Voices said:
>“It’s a real delight to partner with the OPW and the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage to bring live music from a diversity of Ireland's most wonderful artists into these magnificent buildings and these beautiful rooms, and to make them audible and visible the world over. The sound and the feeling of what it is to be Irish right now is manifest in the songs and tunes of these creative artists, who are informed and enriched by the traditions of past times…traditions born and nurtured in these halls and galleries over decades and centuries.”
The performance at Cahir Castle will once again showcase intimate performances in a beautiful historic setting to national and international audiences.
The Blasket Centre - Ionad an Bhlascaoid, in Dunquin, close to Other Voices’ spiritual home of Dingle in West Kerry, will be the last in the series next week.
The series is streaming globally each Thursday in May at 8pm via YouTube and Facebook. Full details and streaming schedule available at Othervoices.ie.
