Who can make a Light-Up Request
Where possible, the OPW will facilitate requests to Light-Up any OPW buildings/sites, National Monuments (NM) or National Historic Properties (NHP) in its care to support charitable causes or fundraising events around the country.
Examples of acceptable requests include:
- State events
- EU or international recognition days/events
- government approved awareness raising initiatives
- recognition of registered charitable causes
- certain local, community initiatives or not-for-profit events
When considering Lighting-Up requests, the OPW will take into account the limitations of the properties, the impact of a new installation on them, and also the availability of OPW resources to carry out the required work.
While the OPW continues to modernise lighting facilities over time, there can be a cost to adapting some of the existing lighting systems for a lighting-up request. Where there is a cost to this process, the cost must be borne by the organisation requesting the Lighting-Up facility.
The list at Appendix 1 details:
- the sites where external lighting is currently available
- the minimum notice required
- the estimated associated costs to facilitate a Lighting-Up request
While the OPW will strive to facilitate as many light-ups as possible, given the high volume of requests received each year, it may not always be possible to facilitate every request.
How to make a Light-Up Request
Timeline
Applications for lighting-up should ideally be made 2 months in advance of the requested date, but no later than the minimum notice period required for the relevant site as outlined in Appendix 1 below.
Application
All applications for Lighting-Up should be submitted through info@opw.ie
Initially, the OPW will check that the cause associated with the request is consistent with the above acceptable criteria and the advance notice period needed.
Decisions
If the request is in line with OPW policy, the request will be forwarded to the relevant section(s) for consideration of its merits and suitability in the context of the relevant property. The OPW will determine if the request can be facilitated in line with this these guidelines.
The OPW will inform the applicant of the decision and whether there are costs associated with facilitating the request.
Costs
Where applicable, fees will be invoiced by the OPW to the applicant and must be paid in full two weeks prior to the commencement of the Light-Up event.
