The National Economic and Social Council (NESC) is the only state agency under the aegis of the Department of the Taoiseach.
The NESC reports to the Taoiseach on strategic issues for Ireland’s economic and social development.
It provides a forum for multilateral dialogue on economic, social and environmental challenges facing the country.
The NESC is funded through a grant received from the vote of the Department of the Taoiseach.
Members of the council are appointed by the Taoiseach on the basis of nominations from the trade unions, business and employers organisations, farmers’ organisations, the environmental and community and voluntary sectors.
The Taoiseach also appoints a number of public servants and independent members. The council meets regularly, usually on a monthly basis.
The council membership is listed on this site: NESC Council Members.
