The main functions of the medical stream of Medical Review and Assessment Section are:

the assessment and review of medical eligibility for all illness, disability and carer income support payments and other related schemes and entitlements
work as the principal control mechanism for the illness, disability and carer payments schemes administered by the department
to provide expert medical advice with regard to the evolution and operation of illness, disability and carer schemes
