Within the department there are three full time State Pathologists, one assistant State Pathologist based out of Cork, two deputy State Pathologists, one senior laboratory analyst and five clerical personnel.
Other specialists who may form part of the team if required include neuropathologists, forensic anthropologists, forensic archaeology and forensic entomology. Medical and science students may have elective or research attachments to the department at different times.
Perinatal and paediatric cases are usually undertaken at one of the regional paediatric hospitals alongside a perinatal or paediatric pathologist.
All histological material from State forensic cases is processed on-site in the Histopathology Laboratory of the Whitehall building.
Toxicological samples from forensic cases are transported to the State Laboratory in Backweston, Co. Kildare for analysis.
