2022 was the second full year of operation for the Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science and as such this marks the Department’s second annual report.
The report is underpinned by our 2021-2023 Statement of Strategy . That Strategy outlines our goals as Talent, Innovation, Inclusion, International, Governance and Capacity and a guiding mission to develop Ireland’s further and higher education and research system to support people in reaching their full potential and to create value, prosperity, resilience and a cohesive, sustainable and vibrant society. Each of the policies, initiatives and strategies described in this report were deployed in support of this mission and I am happy to note that we have been successful in advancing this ambitious agenda.
There were considerable achievements in the Department in 2022, such as the enactment of the Higher Education Authority Bill , and the removal of legislative barriers to the development of apprenticeship programmes in professions and certain sectors of the economy. 2022 also saw the launch of Funding the Future setting a policy direction for the future of higher education. The policy outlines our vision and direction for higher education funding, our commitment to addressing legacy concerns in higher education, and our plans for investment and change. 2022 also saw strong investments in Ireland’s research landscape, supporting not only our researchers and innovators but also adding to the evidence base on key issues such Climate change.
Within the Department, we saw significant organisational development, where we have worked to promote an inclusive culture both internally and with our external stakeholders. I would wish to thank colleagues for their dedication to the work of the Department and their efforts to deliver important changes for learners, researchers and the country as a whole.
Minister Simon Harris TD, Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science
