This Scheme has been confirmed by the Minister of State for Gaeltacht Affairs and has effect from 12 May 2016. It will remain in force for a period of 3 years from this date or until a new Scheme has been confirmed by the Minister under section 15 of the Official Languages Act.
Official Languages Act 2003 Language Scheme 2016 - 2019
Note on Language Scheme
While the stated time period covered by this Language Scheme has passed, the current scheme will remain in force until the commencement of section 19(A) of the Official Languages (Amendment) Act, 2021.
This section of the Act sets out that a new system of language standards will be implemented for each government sector in place of the old system of language schemes, to achieve higher standards with greater interaction with the public.
There will be consultation with the relevant bodies before standards are introduced. The obligations placed on public bodies will be graduated to reflect that some public bodies have greater resources available to them, have greater interaction with Irish speakers, and/or are located within or adjacent to a Gaeltacht area. There will be a lead-in time for each public body prior to the introduction of standard.
