The Planning Division is tasked with ensuring that the appropriate strategic policy and legislative planning framework is in place to promote sustainable economic growth and balanced regional development (example: through implementation of Project Ireland 2040 and National Planning Framework (NPF) ) and maintaining a transparent and robust planning system, and providing appropriate policy guidance and resources to planning authorities and An Bord Pleanála to deliver their statutory functions and requirements and new functions relating to the Office of the Planning Regulator (OPR).
This necessarily involves interaction on Regional Spatial and Economic Strategies (RSES), urban regeneration policy including the Urban Regeneration and Development Fund and land management policy, including the Land Development Agency.
The division also has responsibility for marine planning, through the development of Ireland’s first Marine Spatial Plan and the regulation of development and activity on the foreshore which extends along over 3000 km of shoreline from the high water mark out to 12 nautical miles (22km) in accordance with the provisions of the Foreshore Act 1933, as amended.
