Rural Economic Development Zones (REDZ) are defined as sub county zones within which most people live and work. REDZ are functional geographic areas that reflect how local economic activities and development are spread throughout a region. The pilot scheme to fund these locations was launched in June 2015.
Under the 2015 pilot scheme, €3.8 million of funding was allocated to 51 projects nationwide. Originally €2 million was allocated, however the quality of the applications and level of interest in the scheme was so high that additional funding was made available.
In total €3,758,479 was awarded to 52 approved projects, broken down as follows:
The REDZ scheme was relaunched in 2016 and 47 projects (€6.142 million) were approved. However it did not operate again in 2017 or 2018, but funds from previous years may still be drawn.
