Today, (Tuesday, 2 May), the Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media, Catherine Martin, welcomed the publication of the 2023 Irish Times Century supplement. This important resource will be distributed to primary and post-primary schools around the country as part of the Historical Strand of the Decade of Centenaries Programme 2012-2023, funded by the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media.
Since 2013, The Irish Times has published a series of special supplements to mark the Decade of Centenaries.
In this final year of the Decade of Centenaries Programme the Century supplement addresses some of the key events and people that played such a significant role in the events of 1923 but also the wider revolutionary Decade in Irish history. This includes events and themes related to the Irish Civil War, its eventual end and the challenges and processes involved in the formation of a new State.
Minister Martin said:
“As Minister with responsibility for leading the Decade of Centenaries Programme, I am delighted to welcome the publication of the 2023 Irish Times Century Supplement.
“This important resource will allow for readers, and particularly young people, to connect with the events of 100 years ago in a balanced manner supported by historical research and primary sources.
“One of the main aims of the Decade of Centenaries Programme is to provide varied and interesting opportunities that encourage people of all ages to explore this complex and sensitive period in Irish history.
“The Expert Advisory Group on Commemorations, which is Chaired by Dr Maurice Manning, advocated that young people need to be supported appropriately in learning about this significant but sometimes divisive, distressing and sensitive period in our history. I am delighted to again this year support the distribution of this resource to all primary and post-primary schools and I am grateful to the Department of Education for their assistance in the process to date.
"I am grateful to The Irish Times for their comprehensive, considered and creative approach to examining and remembering the significant events that we mark during the Decade of Centenaries. The ‘Century’ supplement is, and will remain, an important and engaging legacy resource.”
The supplement will also be available online within the Digital Edition App and on the website, www.irishtimes.com, for the duration of the Decade of Centenaries and will be available to all subscribers.
