Minister Hackett announces €2.2 million funding for Peatlands Projects

The Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Senator Pippa Hackett today announced funding for two projects which will focus on finding better ways to manage on-farm drained peat soils in the Midlands. The two projects which secured €2.2 million between them, were selected following an Open Call under the European Innovation Partnerships Initiative (EIP) and they will be funded under Ireland’s Rural Development Programme 2014-202I.
Making the announcement about the winning projects, the Minister said,
“I am really looking forward to seeing what the two groups selected, Wetland Surveys Ireland and Green Restoration Ireland will discover about how we can better manage drained peat soils for carbon friendly farming. Managing our soils in a way that captures and stores carbon can have huge climate benefits and projects like these, which involved close collaboration between scientists, ecologists and farmers will deliver those benefits. By working closely with the farmers, I know that these EIPs will co-develop measures to guide a future large-scale scheme to manage these soils.”
The successful projects were selected following an Open Call for proposals under the European Innovation Partnerships Initiative (EIP). The objectives set were to protect the carbon stock and restore sequestration, maximise other eco-system benefits and build resilience to the impacts of climate change at catchment/landscape level. The successful applicants will be expected to engage with farmers to co-develop a comprehensive pilot scheme, which will identify and implement appropriate actions and measures.
The Minister concluded,
“These projects follow on from our recent investment in a National Soil Carbon Observatory and will develop our knowledge towards rewarding farmers who capture carbon. They also follow on the considerable contribution my Department made to World Wetlands day this week as part of this Government’s contribution to the contribution to achieving our ambitious environmental goals.”

Wetland Surveys Ireland Limited will look at developing a proposed farm programme that aims to enhance the ecological and hydrological functioning of transitional areas through a hybrid results-based payment model whereby farmers receive results-based payments based on the quality of their habitats, while also having the opportunity of claiming additional funds to undertake farm actions.

Green Restoration Ireland will work with participating landowners who farm peatlands. They will provide supports through participatory learning and accessible advice to voluntarily transition their land use from current conventional farming practices to economically viable carbon farming methods. Lessons learned and data gathered will be used to establish a practical model for future expansion of these new methods on farmed peatlands

The European Innovation Partnerships Initiative (EIP) are part of Ireland’s the Rural Development Programme 2014-2020 (RDP). These locally led schemes promote local solutions to specific issues and involve the establishment of Operational Groups to develop ideas, or take existing ideas/research and put them into practice by being hands on in terms of working towards the resolution of a practical problem. 100% funding is provided under this initiative.
The Open Call for Proposals, advertised in August 2020, set out the objectives as protecting the carbon stock and restoring sequestration, maximising other eco-system benefits and building resilience to the impacts of climate change at catchment/landscape level. By engaging with the farmers it is envisaged that a comprehensive pilot scheme, identifying and implementing appropriate actions and measures, can be co-developed.
There have been 3 Open Calls for Proposals to date. 12 projects were chosen under the first Open Call, 9 projects were selected under the second Open Call and 2 under the third Open Call. There are now 25 projects the European Innovation Partnerships Initiative (EIP) including the Hen Harrier Programme and the Freshwater Pearl Mussel Programme.
