Minister English opens new social housing scheme at Cherryorchard, Enniscorthy, Co. Wexford

Minister for Housing and Urban Development Damien English TD, today (10th September 2018) officially opened Wexford County Council’s new housing scheme at Cherryorchard, Enniscorthy, Co. Wexford
Minister English welcomed the delivery of the scheme, which has delivered 8 high quality secure homes for households previously on the Council’s waiting list and for people with special needs. The Minister commended all those involved in the scheme which was designed in-house by the Wexford County Council Housing Department and built by local contractor Kilcavan Property Developments Ltd. Funding of just over €1.6 million was provided by the Department of Housing, Planning and Local Government.
Minister English said that “this government recognises the serious challenge we face in terms of housing and a critical focus and priority has been firmly placed on responding to this challenge through the development and implementation of the Rebuilding Ireland Action Plan for Housing and Homelessness. Rebuilding Ireland is a €6 billion, multi-annual, broadly based action plan which seeks to increase the overall supply of new homes to 25,000 per annum by 2020; deliver an additional 50,000 social housing units in the period to 2021; and meet the housing needs of an additional 87,000 households through the Housing Assistance Payment (HAP) scheme and the Rental Accommodation Scheme”.
The Minister concluded in saying that “Wexford County Council is playing a crucial role in contributing to the overall national delivery” and he thanked the elected members and the Chief Executive for their support and commitment to this project and the wider development programme under Rebuilding Ireland.
