The Minister Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, Simon Harris, today (3 December 2021) invited expressions of interest for nomination as Chairperson and Ordinary Members of the first Governing Body of the proposed new Technological University in the South East.
Minister Harris said:
“The establishment of this new technological university is set to become a reality next year, and the South East can look forward to it increasing higher education access, driving enhanced regional development and increasing opportunities for students, staff, business and enterprise, and local communities across Carlow, Kilkenny, Wexford and Waterford.
“Today, we are inviting nominations for the new chair of the TU and the first two members of the Governing Authority. When established, this new TU will be the culmination of a decade of huge work and effort by staff, students and management of Waterford IT and IT Carlow. TUs have the power to transform regions and a TU serving the South East will be a game changer for Waterford and Carlow and the wider region and we need the strongest calibre of people with significant leadership experience to drive this project.”
The process of filling these vacancies is being managed by the Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science. Expressions of interest will be assessed before the Minister is provided with a shortlist of candidates who are deemed to be suitable for appointment to the governing body, from which the Minister will make his selection.

The closing date for the receipt of applications is 23 December 2021.
On 2 November Minister Harris announced that a new Technological University is to be established in the South East region which would see the dissolution of the Carlow and Waterford Institutes of Technology. The new TU is anticipated to be established in Quarter 2 of 2022 subject to certain technical and operational matters as well as relevant legislative processes being completed.
Providing higher educational programmes across all levels of the National Framework of Qualifications from apprenticeships to doctoral degrees, the new TU will play a pivotal role in the strategic development of the South East and in so doing, will ensure a global outlook and a civic centric value system.
The new TU will ensure growth in education provision and enhanced research opportunities, as well as dynamic community and industry engagement across the region. The TU will present an opportunity to enhance, accelerate and amplify the ambition to contribute to the sustainable development of the region it serves reflected through teaching and learning excellence, research, development, innovation and engagement activities
These positions are not remunerated. Travel and subsistence allowances will be paid in respect of journeys undertaken to attend meetings of the governing body or to transact its business.
Appointment to the first Governing Body will be for a period of two years. This is in line with the provisions of Section 55 (5)(a) of Technological University Act 2018 .
