The Department of Education can confirm that, as of the end of the school year 2022 / 2023, 15,625 Ukrainian pupils had been enrolled in schools across Ireland. Out of that figure, 10,141 of these pupils had been accommodated in primary schools while 5,484 pupils had enrolled in post-primary schools.
Data indicated an enrolment rate of 88% among Ukrainian children aged 5-18.
The department wishes to thank school communities and stakeholders at local and national level across Ireland for their engagement, collaboration and support in accommodating Ukrainian pupils in Irish primary and post-primary schools over the exceptional past school year.
To assist with the transition of Ukrainian students and their families into Irish schools, Regional Education and Language Teams (REALT) continued to operate. These were hosted by the 16 regional education and training boards around Ireland and staffed by regionally-based education support personnel.
These teams ensured that clear, accessible information flows were in place between schools, local education support services and national support structures in relation to people arriving from Ukraine.
Information for parents in Ukrainian and Russian on accessing school places is available on gov.ie/ukraine.
The department will continue to publish figures on the enrolment of Ukrainian children.
The dates of 12 May, in the case of post-primary schools, and 12 June, in the case of primary schools, were selected as final dates to account for any additional enrolments of Ukrainian pupils in the academic year 2022-23.
This is due to the commencement of data entry by schools relating to the progression process for academic year 2023-24. Selecting this early date reduces the risk of double counting of pupils, where, for example new entrants in 6th class may be double counted as they have enrolled in JC1 in the new academic year.
