Minister for Foreign Affairs, Simon Coveney T.D., today participated in a High-level meeting marking the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women and the adoption of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action. The theme of the meeting was “Accelerating the realization of gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls”.
Speaking at the meeting, Minister Coveney reaffirmed Ireland’s commitment to the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action.
“While we have seen significant advancements in women’s rights and gender equality, the job is far from done. Now, in the midst of an historic pandemic, which is having a disproportionate impact on women, we need to renew the determination and commitment we saw in Beijing.”
Minister Coveney stressed that Ireland will use its upcoming Security Council membership to promote the inclusion of women in all aspects of peace and security. He also underscored that gender equality is a key priority of Ireland’s international development cooperation policy.
“We are committed to increasing investments in gender equality, particularly in girls’ education, in women’s economic empowerment and in ensuring their sexual and reproductive health. We are focusing on transformative actions to get all adolescent girls into school and provide them with quality education in safe environments.”
