Office of Public Works announces reopening of Seasonal Heritage Sites

The Office of Public Works is delighted to announce the reopening of heritage sites across Ireland from 16 March 2024. The new season offers a great opportunity for visitors to rediscover the rich and diverse cultural heritage of their local areas.
Heritage sites are an important part of our national identity and our shared history, and they offer a unique insight into the lives and stories of our ancestors. Whether you are interested in ancient monuments, historic houses, gardens, or museums, there is something for everyone to explore and appreciate.
In its “Jewels of History” campaign, the Office of Public Works seeks to highlight jewels across the country and lesser-known locations such as Parkes Castle Co Leitrim and Doneraile Co Cork.
The campaign also seeks to highlight the “Free Wednesday” initiative- on the first Wednesday of each month many OPW Heritage Sites offer free admission to individual visitors and families. Tickets will be allocated on a first come, first served basis and online booking will not be available. Normal conditions of admission apply. Participating sites include Rathfarnham Castle, Trim Castle, Glendalough and many others- a full list is available at: Heritage Ireland / Free Wednesday.
Commenting on the launch of the new season, Minister Patrick O’Donovan said:
“It is that time of year again when so many of Ireland’s treasured attractions are reopened for the public to enjoy. I am delighted that they will reopen ahead of St. Patrick’s Weekend, which marks the start of our tourist season. We are very fortunate in Ireland to have landmarks steeped in history, from ancient monuments to medieval castles, from gardens to museums, there is something for everyone to enjoy. These sites contribute to the local sense of place, the local economy and are great places for all the family to enjoy.
"The OPW and our dedicated staff are the gatekeepers of these national landmarks. The OPW works hard to safeguard and preserve these heritage sites, which highlights the continued investment by the State in our heritage portfolio.
